Danke Google.

So spannend sind Geschäftsreisen.

The beauty of flying

To many of us flying is a necessary discomfort.

  • Luggage limitations if you want to carry on - avoiding airlines to loose your belongings.
  • Queuing in front of check-in counters, security controls and boarding gates.
  • Squeezing yourself into small chairs with just never enough legroom, skin on skin with people you don’t know - and worst case never ever wished to even meet.

I need to admit, flying can be this way. On the other side though, flying can be the last island of pure relaxation.

Let’s face it - there is no other place on earth today where we are not only undisturbed but really disconnected. We have iPhones and Blackberries that connect us to the entire world 24 hours, 7 days a week. The only place where people don’t pull their phones to check e-mails every 5 minutes is on a plane. Nobody calls you and you don´t have to hear other people being called. It is just silent.

If you follow a few simple advices, your next flight can be joyful and relaxing:

1. Fly the night before you have to be at a certain place: airports at late evening are much less crowded and hectic. Less people mean less or no queues. The people at check-in, security controls and restaurants are much more friendly and the atmosphere is calm. The planes are not as booked as during the day and parents with young children usually avoid these flights.

2. Don´t bring work: many people use the time on the plane to get something done - at least they think so. Well the opposite is often true. The plane is a bad place to be productive or even creative. The place is limited. The only thing you are most likely to fit on your tray table is mini-sized notebook (only if the seat of the man in front is upright). There is service during the flight which forces you to completely stop working or skip the service. Imagine, you have just finished a 8-9 hours day with meetings, commuting and other activities your job brings along. Would you start the presentation for next week on your couch at home just to kill time? Why would you do so on a plane? Take a good book with you and if you can do the last bits of your journey at destination by public transportation, get yourself a nice drink. Relax.

3. Take a nap: often we travel during our colleagues working hours. We feel guilty if we sleep during the day. I mean, we wouldn´t take a nap at the office. This is wrong. If you feel like sleeping on the plane (I often do so during take off and landings), do it. There is nothing wrong about it. Nobody will ever know it and care about it. This is the reverse side of traveling and being not with your family while your office colleagues are.

You see, flying can be really nice. If you can just get a different perspective on flying it can be really enjoyable and relaxing.

Think about this before your next flight.

I am traveling a lot and usually try to avoid checking my luggage. Airlines lost my luggage already often enough and it is really disturbing to sit somewhere in Eastern Europe without your luggage. The critical thing is, how to pack enough cloths into the carry-on and how to avoid that your suit looks wrinkled.

I found this interesting video on YouTube and will test it in two weeks on my flight to Moscow.
